Graduate Studies in Art History and Curatorial & Museum Studies
Exercising the eye as well as the mind...
The University of Adelaide and the Art Gallery of South Australia, two of Adelaide's
oldest institutions on the cultural precint of North Terrace, joined forces in
2001 to present a unique postgraduate program in Art History. It has been so successful
that a new program in Curatorial and Museum Studies commenced in 2007 and a new
double degree Master of Arts (Studies in Art History) and Master of Arts (Curatorial
& Museum Studies) is commencing in 2009.
Teaching in both programs is based around the collections and exhibition program of the Art Gallery of South Australia. This exciting teaching approach, drawing on the expertise of the Gallery and the University, is an Australian 'first' and an international trend setter. In 'hands-on' sessions in the Gallery, our students find out about works of art in the Gallery's collection, how best to display them, why they were acquired and so on. As one of our students commented 'where else in Australia, would I be able to study Art History and attend classes given by the Director of the Art Gallery'.
