The James Gartrell Prize

Whereas James Gartrell in 1924 gave the sum of £200, for the purpose of establishing an annual prize the following rules are hereby made:

  1. The prize shall be called the James Gartrell Prize.
  2. The value of the prize shall be $200, unless otherwise determined by the Faculty.
  3. The prize shall be awarded to the student who attains the highest mark in a Classical Studies subject, with preferences to more advanced subjects.
  4. If, in any particular year, the examiners consider that no candidate is suitable for the prize, then no award shall be made.
  5. If, in any particular year, the examiners deem that two or more candidates are of equal merit, the prize shall be divided equally amongst the candidates.
  6. These rules may be varied from time to time, but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.
