The Mares-Eaden Prize for Shakespearean and Early Modern English Literary Studies

Whereas a sum in excess of ten thousand dollars has been paid by private subscription to the University of Adelaide for the purpose of providing excellence in scholarship in Shakespearean and Early Modern English Literary Studies, including the provision of a prize in memory of Francis Hugh (Tim) Mares and Philippa Robin (Robin) Eaden, former members of the Department of English Language and Literature, the following rules are hereby made:

  1. The prize shall be known as The Mares-Eaden Prize for Shakespearean and Early Modern English Literary Studies. The endowment for the prize was the result of action by the Co-Patrons of the Mares-Eaden Fund whose continuing interest in the prize is indicated in rules 2, 4 and 7.
  2. So long as the fund and the income thereof suffice for the purpose, the prize shall be of the annual value of $400 for an undergraduate essay and/or $700 for an Honours thesis, unless determined otherwise by the Co-Patrons.
  3. The prize shall be awarded annually for the best undergraduate essay or Honours thesis in Shakespearean and Early Modern English Literary Studies.
  4. The examiners shall include a representative of the Co-Patrons.
  5. If the examiners deem that two or more essays/theses are of equal merit, the prize shall be divided equally among the students concerned.
  6. If, in any particular year, the examiners consider that no such essay of thesis is suitable for the prize, then no award shall be made.
  7. These rules may be varied from time to time by the Co-Patrons of the Mares-Eaden Fund in consultation with the Faculty but the title and purpose of the prize shall not be changed.
