The PW Rice Scholarship

In 1961 Therese Marie Rice bequeathed her estate to the University to establish a scholarship to commemorate her father, PW Rice and to be awarded each year to a graduate of sufficient merit who had gained first class Honours in Classics or Modern or Medieval Languages taught at the
University. A number of changes are needed to sharpen the focus of the scholarship and to bring the wording of the prize into line with changes to the administrative structure of the Faculty. In addition, a build up in the accumulated capital in the fund has made it possible to introduce some
additional, smaller research travel awards to assist postgraduate students with cost associated with short overseas research trips. The rules have been modified in recent years and the further refinement of the rules is made below on the advice of the Head of the Centre for European
Studies.

Rules of the P W Rice Scholarship & P W Rice Research Travel Awards

1. There shall be a scholarship called “The PW Rice Scholarship” and awards called “The PW Rice Research Travel Awards.”
2. The scholarship and awards may be offered as often as the income of the bequest allows.
3. The scholarship and awards may offered on the recommendation of the Head of the Centre for European Studies and General Linguistics and the Head of the Department of English to postgraduate research students (Masters by Research or PhD) who are currently enrolled in a
research degree at the University of Adelaide, having gained First Class Honours in Classics or Latin or Ancient Greek or Linguistics or French or German or Medieval English language taught in the University and/or who have a demonstrated capacity for research work, to enable the
graduate to read for a degree or a postgraduate diploma at an overseas university or other approved institutions in a field of study related to that of the candidate’s research degree.
4. The relevant departments for both the scholarship and the research shall call for applicants for travel awards, during semester 2 in the year preceding the year for which the award is to be made. A committee comprising academic staff from the Centre for European Studies and General Linguistics, with representation from the Department of English shall assess the applications, and winners shall be notified by the middle of December of the same year.
5. The scholarship and awards shall be awarded annually and in the case of the scholarship, shall be tenable for up to two years.
6. No awards shall be made, if in the opinion of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, no candidate is of sufficient merit.
7. These rules may be varied from time to time by the Faculty, but the title and general purpose of the scholarship and awards shall not be changed.

The PW Rice Scholarship

8. (a) Unless the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences decides otherwise, and subject to clause 9(c) below, the value of the scholarship shall be $15,000 per year. In addition to this amount, and as long as no other grant for travel purposes has been received, the candidate is
entitled to claim the costs associated with travel to and from the overseas institution.
(b) Confirmation of the award of the PW Rice Scholarship will be dependent upon the candidate giving evidence that s/he has been accepted by the university or other institution concerned and that s/he is able to make suitable arrangements to proceed there.
(c) A candidate who obtains any other award (whether it be scholarship, fellowship, salary, living allowance or other emolument) shall at once inform their Head of Department/Centre. The candidate will normally be required to retain such other award and the Faculty, after considering
all the circumstances, will decide what adjustment will be made in the annual value of the PW Rice Scholarship.
(d) Tne half of the annual value of each scholarship will be paid to the candidate before departing from Australia. Thereafter, for the period of tenure of the scholarship, payments will be made in half yearly instalments in advance. The relevant Head will normally pay approved compulsory fees direct to the overseas institution, on receipt of an appropriate account.
(e) Payment of the scholarship for the second year will be contingent upon receipt by the Head of the relevant Department/Centre, of a satisfactory report from the candidate’s supervisor, on the candidate’s work during the preceding year.

The PW Rice Research Travel Awards

9. (a) Unless the Faculty decides otherwise, the amount available to fund the research travel awards shall be determined by the annual income of the PW Rice fund, after expenses associated with the award of the PW Rice Scholarship have been expended, as outlined in clause 8(a).
(b) The residual funds shall be used to pay for the travel expenses incurred by postgraduate students (as defined by clause 3 above), or in exceptional circumstances, by students enrolled in Honours programmes (in the disciplines indicated in clause 3 above), whose research projects
would be enhanced by a short period of research overseas.
(c) The maximum amount available to a Research Travel Award winner shall be $2,500.
